SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES
EXPLORED: METHODS,
MATERIALS AND PROCESSES

Background

When asked by the Society of Environmental Graphic Design to talk about sustainable design at their annual conference, I began by thinking about what would be most helpful for designers. Working with the sign fabricator Visual Graphic Systems and several material suppliers, a series of mock-ups were made to put many "green" methods, materials and processes to the test. Each mock - up was accompanied by a sustainable checklist audit. The audits examined the life cycle of each sign prototype component and serve as a reference for future projects.

Checklist Audit Categories

The Mock-ups were evaluated based on the following criteria. Properties of Materials Used Properties of Finishes Used Environmental Standards Assembly/Ease of Disassembly Modularity/Flexibility By-Products of Manufacturing Life Span Maintenance Each analysis was based on a combination of 3rd Party endorsements, information provided by manufacturers, and applied sustainable strategies.
Selected Mock-Up Attributes
