NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIVERSITY

As a Senior Designer and Manger of Sustainable Design at Two Twelve Associates, sustainability was addressed while the lead designer on a campus wide wayfinding signage program for NAU.

The bases of the primary building Identities were designed using natural Northern Arizona sandstone. The stone was transported from a local stone quarry, minimizing the energy used for transportation.

Porcelain sign panels were chosen for their longevity, preventing the need for frequent material and finish repairs. The panels were fabricated by Winsor Fireform, using a closed loop process. Winsor's process circulates all effluents, ensuring that no waste water enters the sewage system. The porcelain fabrication process does not release noxious VOC's (volatile organic compounds) into the air. Harmful, airborne heavy metals become inert once fired into the glass.
Exposed metal hardware reflects NAU's industrial local history and facilitates replacement of individual sign components, if need be. Modular sign components decrease the materials required for repairs or modifications over time.

A solar powered campus directory was recommended for night time drivers on campus. The solar panel was designed to also serve as a canopy, shielding users approaching the campus map from rain and snow.

Existing street sign posts were outfitted with new street signs consistent with the sign program. The re-use of sign posts cut down on the amount of materials used for the project, and saved NAU money.
